Factors That Cause Alternators to Malfunction
An alternator’s primary responsibility in a vehicle is to provide the electrical current for the vehicle to run. It supports everything, from the computers to the radio to the sparks in the engine that make the car run. Its secondary function is to recharge the battery once the vehicle is running.
In order for an alternator to provide either of the said functions, it requires an electrical current applied to it as well as the spinning movement coming from the belts on the engine that drive it. Without both of these, an alternator won’t be able to generate an electrical current.
Various factors lead to alternator failure. Here are some of the most common ones:
- Internal Electrical Contact Failure
- Oil Soaked Into It
- Basic Electrical Failure
- Bearing Failure
- Clutch Failure

Signs of a Failing Alternator
1. Dead Battery
When an alternator fails, it can’t sufficiently charge the battery while the engine’s running. This causes the charge to deplete faster than expected.
2. Malfunctioning Accessories
Windows that take longer to roll up or down are a sign of a malfunctioning alternator that doesn’t provide enough power to a car’s electronics.
3. Frequent Stalling
If your car frequently stalls out, it’s an indication that the alternator isn’t providing the spark plugs with enough power.
4. Whining or Growling Noises
Whining or growling sounds can be a sign that the belt that turns your alternator’s pulley is misaligned.
5. Burning Smell
Foul odors of burning wires and rubber indicate that some parts of the alternator are wearing out.
