A Major BMW Engine Repair That COULD Have Been Prevented

I’m Saul Reisman here at Saul’s AUTOTEK in Greenwood Village, near Denver Colorado. And today we’re going to talk to you a little bit about BMW engines and in this case why this one’s on our floor.

Now, this 2013 BMW X5 was originally equipped from the factory with a straight-six engine with a compound or bi-turbo setup from the factory. Now, this vehicle was also optioned in an M package, which was a twin-turbo V8, much more expensive, much faster version of the car. Now the main difference is while the smaller engine still makes plenty of power, it has to work a lot harder to move the same vehicle around because it doesn’t make as much power.

Now the reason that we’re talking about this car today is that this repair could have been avoided.

The reason that this vehicle is here today is that the timing chain inside the engine has failed as a result of not getting proper oil change service intervals and has led to the complete and total failure of the engine. Specifically what was going on with this engine is inside it, where the oil pump pumps oil from the bottom of the motor up into the valve train and uses what we referenced as “straws” or BMW references as “VANOS,” V-A-N-O-S, solenoid system, pumps that oil through the engine in order to distribute it to the perfect places so it gets the best lubrication possible.

Now unfortunately from the lack of service intervals, those tubes were actually clogged and therefore were not able to deliver oil properly. Just like if you had plaque built up in your arteries, it could cause really serious problems down the road if you don’t take care of that to a young age. Unfortunately, that’s what happened with this guy. This vehicle is less than 10 years old, has less than a hundred thousand miles and is looking at a repair that costs thousands and thousands of dollars as a result of a simple maintenance service that just wasn’t taken care of appropriately.

Now, fortunately for the owner of this vehicle, we here at Saul’s AUTOTEK work with all types of aftermarket warranty and insurance companies so we can really help the owner out. We’re going to make sure that they’re able to get this engine replaced, get it done at a reasonable cost, a reasonable timeframe, have a rental car provided to them, and they’re not going to go broke in the meantime waiting for it.

So if you’ve got a concern about your vehicle, whether it’s a BMW and you want to make sure you get the right German-trained hands on the vehicle, or you’re just concerned about timing chain service and want to make sure that you don’t end up in this boat, feel free to come and see us.

We’re here seven days a week, 365 days a year at AUTOTEK tech so that we can help take care of your vehicle.

Whether it’s a German vehicle, an American, a Japanese, a Korean or anything in the middle that’s made between them all, we’re here to help.
