The term “alignment” refers to how your tires point in relation to your vehicle. There are three main angles that make up the alignment:
1. Toe
The toe angle dictates the direction in which the tires point. Tires pointing inward have a positive toe angle (toe-in) while tires pointing outward have a negative angle (toe-out). Proper adjustment of these angles is essential in regulating suspension bushing, reducing tire wear, and ensuring stable handling.
2. Camber
The camber angle is the slope of the imaginary line that runs through the center of the tire. It tells you if your tires are sitting straight up or down and leaning in or out. When this angle is out of specification, it can cause abnormal and premature tire wear and limit your vehicle’s performance.
3. Caster
The caster angle dictates if the tire is farther forward or rearward when observed from the side of the vehicle. This angle affects the stability of your wheel speed, steering effort, and cornering ability. Unlike the first two angles mentioned, this doesn’t affect tire wear.
There are other angles involved with alignments. However, these are the most common for adjustment. Not all vehicles can have all of these angles adjusted on all wheels. Because symptoms are not always present when an alignment needs to be performed, we recommend including vehicle checkups in your regular maintenance.
