Upgrading And Maintaining A 1965 Ford Mercury Marauder | Denver Auto Repair

Good morning. I’m Saul Reisman here at Sal’s Automotive. Today we have the privilege of servicing a 1965 Ford Mercury Marauder.

This was a pretty special vehicle when this vehicle came out. Only a few thousand were made in this trim package and had a few options that really made it one of the true performance keepers that has been forgotten about.

While we see lots of Camaros and Novas and Mustangs from the ‘60s that people are restoring there is very very few of these vehicles still on the road. This vehicle was equipped from the factory with a 390 Big Block V8 Engine, a four-barrel carburetor, a four-speed automatic transmission and was factory produced at just under 370 horsepower.

Because Mercury as a division of Ford is so proud of the work that they do they literally put their engravements and their markings all over this vehicle. In 1965 plastic had just starting being used in cars. Yet Mercury put their symbol directly on every piece of plastic they could find in the vehicle.

Additionally, some of the components that they used in this vehicle were some of the longest lasting and most reliable. When people say they don’t make ‘em as they used to this truly is one of those situations. This engine is 51 years old, has 186,000 original miles and the reason it came into us today is for a very minor overheat condition. That condition is the result of a steel tank that is 50 years old, just barely starting to rot out and leak from that seams.

Rather than replace as we would in a modern vehicle and simply remove and replace the assembly as a whole, this part doesn’t exist anymore. We can’t do that. Nobody sells it. Nobody makes it. We can’t even find one in the junkyard. So in our case, we’re going to remove it from the vehicle. We’re going to send it to a bronze radiator repair specialist here in town that we partner with that all they do for a living is repair, replace and rebuild these kinds of components for motor vehicles. They will be able to repair the current piece, put it back to a factory condition, weld all the seams back together and then reinforce it to ensure longer life than original – apparently, 50 years can be approved upon. At that point, we will be able to get it installed back on the vehicle and the owner will have true numbers to numbers matching the vehicle.
