Repairing A British Sports Car 1967 Triumph MG the Midget Denver Auto Repair

Good morning. I’m Saul Reisman here at Saul’s Automotive, and today we’re taking a look at a pretty unique vehicle.

We see, occasionally, some of these little British sports cars, and today we get the pleasure of servicing a 1967 Triumph MG.

Now, it was the given the designation MG as for “Midget.” Then, they then produced an MGA and MGB, this being the original true MG. The vehicle was designed to be very small, very tight-handling, very lightweight — and truly just a gentleman’s sports car for weekend pleasures was the goal when they built it.

It is not comfortable in any way. It does not hold anything in the trunk. It has a very small gas tank. Completely impractical car in every way. At the same time, absolutely a blast to drive. Very responsive. Very fun on the road. Now, 50 years later, a major, major collectible vehicle. In the case of this vehicle, the owner brought it to us because they have purchased it as part of a retirement project, and they would like this to be their weekend warrior, so to speak, to take out on nice summer drives.

Because the vehicle is 50 years old, though, there’s a lot of seals that need some addressing. Every oil seal in it, front to back, top to bottom, is leaking because it’s been sitting for many, many years. Here at Saul’s Automotive, we have parts access worldwide. We’ll be able to take this vehicle apart, disassemble the motor, transmission, the radiator, the rack-and-pinion steering, the rear differential, every seal and every bearing in the vehicle, source these 50- and 60-year-old parts, get them all replaced and resealed and re-lubricated so that this vehicle can actually have a good service life, spend a lot of time on the road and not need any major repairs.

By the way, one thing to often overlook with these vehicles is that this vehicle was produced with leaded fuel, so part of the task that we’ll be doing, while we have this Denver vehicle apart, is we’ll be replacing the exhaust seats with hardened exhaust valves so that we know it can run on modern fuel without any further modification or damage to the engine. Food for thought if you’re thinking about taking out yours on a long road trip.

It’s often hard to find those lead-bottle additives at gas stations in the middle of nowhere. We can eliminate that problem. If you have any questions or concerns about your MG or any other small British sports car, please feel free to bring it by.

Call 303.919.7769 and we would be happy to take a look at your classic sports car and see how we can keep you on the road for another 50 years.
