The amazing 1973 Ford Mustang and why it lasts as an American Legend

Hi there. I’m Saul Reisman here at Saul’s Autotek. Today, we’re going to talk a little bit about the Ford Mustang, a classic American car, and something that has lived in the lives of us here in the States literally for decades.

Now, one question that we often get asked about the Ford Mustang is,

“What has kept this 1973 Ford Mustang car alive?”

The reality is in 1964, then 64 and a half and 65, the production of this vehicle struck American culture to a chord. That along with the production of the new Chevrolet Corvette gave Americans a cheap, fast car that they could really see great performance from.

The Ford Mustang and the Chevy Corvette, while vastly different in price and comparison, were actually very competing vehicles for one reason, the Ford Mustang was built to be fast and cheap. Plain and simple. The Corvette was supposed to be fast and fancy. So that it was a retired man’s car, and somebody could have more fun with it and had more luxury options to it.

Well, the reason I’m talking about this is that I’m standing in front of a 1973 Ford Mustang.

This car is almost 50 years old, but I’m talking to you about it on the same day that new C8 Corvette mid-engine is being released. Now, why would I bring up that? The reason is these cars have been wrapped around each other since they started production. Now, this ’73 Ford Mustang has seen some better days. There’s a hole in the soft top that I could crawl through, but the motor runs great. The owner has owned it for 25 plus years.

The only reason it’s actually here today is that it sat still long enough that the fuel deteriorated and actually did some damage to the inside of the fuel tank. So today, we’re gonna remove that fuel tank. We’re going to coat it inside and out, just like you taking Pepto-Bismol to take care of your stomach. We’re going to make it seal on the inside so it can hold clean fuel in it and continue to do its job for this vehicle.

That way, we can provide a cost-effective solution to the owner rather than replacing the tank with an expensive alternative. We’ll be able to save this tank, get him back on the road and keep him going. Now the reason that this car still to this day maintains its popularity is that it hasn’t changed.

It is still fast and it is still cheap. If you grabbed any magazine of any automotive supplier today and you picked it off the shelf and you said, “What’s the fastest car made this year for less than $30,000 or $35,000?” The cheapest, fastest cars out there, it’s still going to be a brand new Ford Mustang. Running a 13-second quarter-mile at 120 miles an hour for $30,000 puts it in the same category as cars that cost 60, 70 or $80,000. Now, the American dream is to have freedom, have space, and have control over your domain.

That’s at least what we’re taught and told. Well, the Ford Mustang is a classic American icon and example of that. Not only has this vehicle allowed people to have the freedom to do what they want, but it lets you have that breakneck speed without breaking your wallet to do it. So you don’t have to be rich and famous to have a fast, fun car.

If you want a Ford Mustang cause you want to go fast, this is your chief solution. At the same time, this is also a car that can be kept on the road for decades. Manufacturers have enlisted to keep these cars together by going to aftermarket producers to make and remake some of the components that no longer exist for this car. When we were looking for the fuel tank hanger assembly so the fuel gauge will read accurately because the old one was so corroded and degraded in this vehicle, there were not one, not two, but five manufacturers that make that replacement sending unit.

So if you’ve got a concern about your Ford Mustang, whether it’s a classic and you just want to keep it to run, if it’s collectible and you want it to be a show quality finish or it’s just your fun new toy and you want it to get to working back and have some fun with it, come and see us here at Saul’s Autotek. We would love to take care of your Mustang. We can show you a few tips and tricks to keep yours in the best shape. We can show you what 30 years plus of experience will do to make sure yours lasts just as long as this guy. We’ll see you tomorrow with yours or maybe we’ll see in 50 years with it when it’s still on the road. 303-919-7769 here in Greenwood Village, Colorado.
