today, we’re going to talk a little bit about your brake calipers and the way the hydraulic system works in your vehicle. Ninety-five percent of all motor vehicles on the road use a disc brake with a hydraulic caliper in the front of the vehicle, and 85 percent use the same set up in the rear of the vehicle.
We are going to talk about your brakes and how you can best keep them in the best possible shape and at the same time keep your costs as low as possible.
Many locations, here in town, may tell you that they offer a brake special that’s the same price whether it’s a Nissan, a Honda, a Ford, a Chevy, a Dodge, as long as it’s a car. They’ll charge you the same amount of money, no matter what.
we’re going to talk a little bit about the way your brakes fail when they start to wear out. From the factory your vehicle’s brake pads are anywhere from five-to-10 millimeters thick.
One of the least inspected braking systems on your vehicle is typically the parking brake. As 90 percent of vehicles sold in North America come equipped with automatic transmissions, the majority of us don’t even use our parking brake anymore because we don’t think we need to.
The next brake rotor design we’re gonna look at is what we call a dual-plane or a vented rotor.
Now, this rotor has two separate sides with a slot between them that has angled vents, so as it rotates, air flow can cool the rotor much more efficiently.
There are many different repairs that a vehicle might need that are related to brakes. The components of the brake system that might typically need maintenance are:
For a typical brake repair on most Denver vehicles, we replace brake pads and resurface rotors. When we perform this service we use an on-car brake lathe. What this means is we do not remove the rotors from the vehicle, rather we put a machine on the vehicle that performs the service right there. The main benefit to this is it removes almost all run-out in the rotor as it is in relation to the vehicle hub. Because of this, it removes vibration when applying the brakes.
Another common repair that needs to be done with brakes is simply resurfacing the rotors. If you notice a vibration when you apply the brakes then you may need to have this done. Again we use the on-car brake lathe to put a new finish on the rotors and remove the run-out. If the brake pads are still good they may not need to be replaced during this service. If the pads are close to being worn, it usually saves money to replace them at the same time.
In some circumstances, it may be necessary to replace the rotors rather than resurface them. The common causes for this include but are not limited to:
Brake Pads went “metal to metal” meaning there was no friction material left
Many European manufactured vehicles have non-serviceable brake rotors
Rotors are under manufacturer specification for thickness
Calipers generally will only need to be replaced if they have been in a corrosive environment and do not move correctly. This is not a very common part to need to be replaced on a Colorado vehicle, however, it does happen from time to time.
In many instances when you perform repairs or maintenance to the brake system you should also change the brake fluid. When you apply the brakes a large amount of friction is created at the wheels to slow you down. With this friction becomes heat. Heat will cause the brake fluid to break down in the calipers and wheel cylinders and can lead to more expensive repairs later on.
